Boy, 4, Suddenly Dies of Possible 'Dry Drowning' Week After Swim

The tragic death of a four-year-old from dry drowning saved the life of another boy who almost died from the same symptoms.

Delgado had shown symptoms of vomiting and diarrhea for several days after returning from a swim trip, and then he stopped breathing, his family said.

Suddenly, however, the boy began complaining of shoulder pain and later woke up out of his sleep. Physicians at the emergency found the little boy had fluid in his lungs and around his heart.

"Dry drowning is when someone takes a small amount of water in their mouth or nose, and it causes their airway to spasm and close up", he says, noting that this phenomenon can occur in the water and immediately after exiting.

Dr. Eric Higginbotham, the medical director of the emergency department at Dell Children's Medical Center in Austin, says the dangers - although extremely rare - of dry or delayed drowning exist even after your day at the pool.

His father hopes his story can raise awareness for other parents with young children.

Both dry drowning and secondary drowning are rare, Patrick said, affecting only about 5 percent of kids who have a "near-drowning" experience, in which they are submerged in water and have trouble breathing but are revived.

Today reports that dry drowning is extremley rare, but very risky, and it's important to know the causes, symptoms and warning signs.

"He was full of life", said his mother, Tara Delgado. "He said ahhh", Francisco Delgado Jr., father of the boy told ABC Eyewitness News. All it takes is inhaling water through the mouth or nose, and it can be hard to know it's happening unless a child starts to cough or seems to be in distress.

"When she [paramedic] came in, she told us it's what's called 'dry drowning". In Frankie's case, the dry drowning may have occurred when he had a "near-drowning incident", reported USA Today. That way parents know if their children swallowed water, for example. "He was loved by so many people ... the world lost a attractive soul".

The family is "heartbroken" over "Baby Frankie's" death, according to a GoFundMe page set up to pay for the little boy's funeral. "The world lost a handsome soul", the page read.
