Tight security and tears as Manchester benefit concert kicks off

Ariana Grande's benefit for Manchester on Sunday was a star-packed celebration of pop music and its ability to inspire and elate young people.

Fellow fans Jasmine Mayers and Lydia Smith said they came to the concert "to show support to the victims' families".

Ariana Grande fans have described the nerves and excitement they felt before Sunday's huge One Love Manchester concert.

The Manchester native took the stage with Coldplay's Chris Martin to perform Oasis' hit "Live Forever".

In a matter of weeks, Ariana Grande put together a lovely concert for all those lost and injured at her concert in Manchester a few weeks ago.

"Over 10,000 people who didn't attend the original concert are trying to get into the benefit for free."
"I love you guys so much and I think that the kind of love and unity you're displaying is the kind of medicine that the world really needs right now".

Rather than wait till the end of the show to perform, Grande appeared at various points to do her songs (including "Be Alright" and a throbbing "Break Free") and to collaborate with other artists on the bill.

Bieber performed acoustic versions of his hits, "Love Yourself" and "Cold Water".

Ariana Grande also made a return to the stage for the first time since the terror attack with a masterclass of defiance, performing a string of her most famous hits. The rapper had previously cancelled his scheduled performances at two music festivals in Washington D.C and Minnesota following the attack, and has been inseparable from Ariana in the two weeks since the attack.

During her set, Part of Me, singer Katy Perry told the crowd: "love conquers fear and love conquers hate, and this love you choose will give you strength and it's our greatest power", before asking the crowd to turn and hug the person next to them.

Fellow singer Miley Cyrus joined the rendition and said: "I'd like to wrap my arms around each and every one of you and thank you".

Agreeing, a third added: "Will I Am. Everybody say, 'We honor you, and we love you'".

All proceeds from the concert, taking place at the Emirates Old Trafford stadium in the city, are going to the Red Cross's Manchester Emergency Fund to help victims and families impacted by the attack.

Olivia was one of the 22 people killed when the suicide blast exploded in the foyer of Manchester Arena on Monday, May 22, just as Ariana's concert ended.

The boy band takeover continued as One Direction's Niall Horan took to the stage, causing some fans to tear up as he dedicated "This Town" to victims of the suicide bombing.

"It's not easy to always choose love, especially in moments like these, it can be the most hard thing to do, but love conquers fear and love conquers hate".
