AMD also announced that its upcoming 16-core, 32-thread Ryzen Threadripper CPU will launch in "summer 2017".
Furthermore, AMD is not taking Nvidia's GPU lead lying down - the press event also saw a teaser of its new Radeon RX Vega, aimed at competing with Nvidia's top-end GeForce GTX 1080 cards. It will feature "up to" 16 cores and 32 threads, and offer 64 PCIe 3.0 lanes, and quad-channel DDR4 memory. Intel's new Core i9/X299 platform hikes that up to 44 lanes of PCIe, but only in the higher-end chips, creating artificial limitations on more modest versions.
The new Ryzen 9 CPUs, codenamed "Threadripper", are based on the company's Zen-core architecture, with the base model sporting 10 cores on the CPU. AMD hasn't released details about its mobile RX 580, but given how much power it consumes to crank clock speeds in its desktop variant, I'd expect performance to be somewhat dialed-back for laptops.
In a demo at the Computex trade show in Taiwan, AMD executive Jim Anderson showed off the new flagship central processing unit (CPU), the Ryzen Threadripper. ASRock, Asus, Gigabyte, and MSi will have motherboards ready when the chip launches.
The Threadripper is targeted at the high-end desktop market, including gaming, 4K graphics rendering, and VR applications, AMD said. "We were thrilled to be joined by customers and partners including Acer, Asus, Dell, HP and Lenovo to showcase their latest AMD Ryzen-powered PCs".
"You basically can't do this without the horsepower of Threadripper with the four Frontier Edition GPUs", Su said. "This is an example of high-performance computing at its best".
On the Ryzen, the same scene in the same game played without a hitch. The ThreadRipper/Epyc socket in particular should be interesting; the chip is nothing short of massive, and in the one photo AMD has released so far of an Epyc motherboard, the socket looks equally huge. Officials said it would feature four cores alongside Radeon graphics in a single chip. Vega GPUs use high-bandwidth memory to handle big data sets.
Beyond that, EPYC enterprise CPUs were given a Jun 20, 2017 hard launch date, and Radeon Instinct Vega "Redeon Vega Frontier Edition" workstation/enterprise GPUs were given a hard launch date of June 27th. "We are excited to announce our brand new powerful ROG mobile platform - the Strix GL702ZC".
