Queensland cop killer shot dead

Rick Maddison was shot by police after a 21-hour siege

A police officer has been shot dead while responding to a traffic incident in the Lockyer Valley, west of Brisbane.

'Initial information suggests shots were fired at police in Seventeen Mile, and a police vehicle has been involved in a traffic incident'.

"Specialist police have returned fire - the male person has been shot and that male person has been declared deceased at the scene".

Mr Forte was killed after intercepting Maddison, who police had described as a "wanted person", about 14:20 local time (04:20 GMT) on Monday.

Wayne Lyons, who lives on Wallers Road, said he saw four police cars chasing a four-wheel-drive before they disappeared into the trees.

Commissioner Ian Stewart told a press conference late on Monday night that police wanted to resolve the stand-off "as peacefully as humanly possible".

Other police officers at the scene of the shooting had been able to extract Senior Constable Forte and themselves.

Authorities had set up an exclusion zone around the farm and began negotiating with Maddison at midnight.

Assistant Commissioner Tony Wright told reporters Maddison was "challenged by police" after he attempted to escape.

The police officer fatally wounded after a wanted man opened fire during a pursuit has been identified as Senior Constable Brett Forte.

"I know was it was completely unexpected and Brett sadly never had a chance", Queensland Police Union chief executive Ian Leavers said.

An emergency situation was later declared and residents warned an armed man was on the run.

Lockyer Valley mayor Tanya Milligan reinforced the police advice for residents to remain inside and expressed her condolences for the police officer's family.

At 4.30pm, Mr Pennell said police holding semi-machine guns arrived at the front gate of his home to evacuate him and his neighbours from the area.

Police have cordoned off a large section of the area, forcing some locals to sleep in their cars.

"As you can understand, it's an extremely traumatic time for that family".
