Scott Dixon escaped injury on lap 54 of the Indy 500 after a spectacular, fiery crash destroyed his race vehicle.
Howard bounced off the wall at turn one and as he slid down the track, Dixon crashed into him from behind at high speed. Dixon then went over the top of Howard's vehicle as he tried to get past and he became airborne, crashing into the safety fencing. Howard was not hurt.
"Definitely a wild ride", Dixon said after the crash.
The race was red flagged for 19 minutes from 1:09 p.m.to 1:28 p.m. Engines have now been restarted as the field completed Lap 56. "I was just doing what I could to try to make up laps, salvage the race, pick up some yellows". "I'm glad everyone is OK".
Vision of the crash from the driver's seat show Dixon's hands on the steering wheel as his auto gets airborne. I'd already picked that way to go and there was nowhere else to go.
Takuma Sato, who won this year's race, became the first Japanese driver to win the Indy 500, The Drive reported. Thanks to everyone who has made these safety advancements. Credit to INDYCAR, Indianapolis Motor Speedway, the safety team, Dallara for building this vehicle. Howard said that forced him to the top of the track, and the British driver for Schmidt Peterson Motorsports wound up in the outside wall.
"It just wasn't meant to be but you've got to be in to win it. To say that I'm upset would be an understatement".
