Minnesota Unemployment In April Steady, Down In Wisconsin

The leisure and hospitality sector, which has added 500 jobs since last April, lost 2,400 over the month, and construction, which has added 3,800 year-over-year, lost 1,000 in April.

But the state's unemployment rate is still well above the US unemployment rate of 4.4 percent, which is at a 10-year low. The rate was 4.8 percent in March and 4.9 percent in April 2016.

The transportation and utilities sector had the most job growth on the First Coast in the past year with about 4,700 jobs created.

"While job growth was more subdued in April, Washington's economy continues to trend positively", Paul Turek, economist for the department, said in a written statement.

Nebraska's unemployment rate was 3 percent in April, down from 3.1 percent in March and 3.2 percent in April 2016. St. Johns County hasn't had an unemployment rate above 5 percent since July 2014.

Officials said the all-time low statewide jobless rate was 4.7 percent in November-December 2000.

Florida had 460,000 people without jobs out of a labor force of 10,142,000. The next lowest is nearly a full percentage point lower than New Mexico's-Louisiana at 5.8 percent (Washington D.C. had an unemployment rate of 5.9 percent).

Escambia County's seasonably adjusted unemployment rate decreased from 4.3 percent in March to 3.9 percent in April. In the past year, the county's labor force has grown by more than 4,000 people, and the number of people working has increased by about 4,600.

The Lincoln area also saw a decline in the number of people employed as well as the number of people unemployed. He said when the recession hit several years ago, there were about six to seven job seekers per job opening. Gains were spread among several industries, with eight of the 14 major industries adding close to 1,000 jobs.

Florida's unemployment rate remained slightly higher than the national rate of 4.4 percent.

According to the same report, one of the reasons behind the jobless growth is that companies are increasingly turning to automation and digital processes "even as they pare other costs, including wage bills, to future-proof growth and profits in a competitive environment".

Braun noted Indiana's historically low number of unemployment insurance claims are also a sign of a constricting labor market. That's the lowest rate the county has seen since April 2001. Other sectors adding jobs over the month were mining and logging, and educational and health services.
