"Many members of the public have supported policing during the times when officers and staff lose their lives on duty, whether within this force of nationally". It began when President Kennedy established May 15 as National Peace Officers Memorial Day in 1962, and a joint resolution of Congress established the rest of the week as national police week.
"It's nice to see the community support for law enforcement", said Brandi Erickson, whose husband, Justin, serves on the North Platte Police Department.

They're doing it because they're dedicated, and they're doing it because they're professional. "Please, take time this week to thank your local officers and their families for their sacrifices and commitment to your community". The awards recognize college or university, municipal, county or state law enforcement officers who go the extra mile.
Fallen local officers include Smith County sheriff's deputies David Neal and James Holden, who were killed in a shootout September 27, 1851, when family members attempted to break a man out of jail being held for attempted murder.
