In The Young Pope, Law starred as the fictional first American pope, an outrageously conservative figurehead who seems hell-bent on turning the world of the Vatican upside down. The worldwide distributor is FremantleMedia global. Variety announced today that Young Pope auteur Paolo Sorrentino is developing not a sequel or continuation, but a followup, entitled The New Pope.
Creator and writer Paolo Sorrentino confirmed to Variety that there would be a follow-up to The Young Pope entitled The New Pope, but it would *not* be a second season and Jude Law would not be playing the title role.
"The New Pope" is expected to film sometime next year, so it may not air until 2019. "The Young Pope" was sold to more than 110 territories. The screenplay was written by Sorrentino and Umberto Contarello and will be produced by Lorenzo Mieli and Mario Gianani for Wildside and co-produced by Mediapro.
But before production begins, Sorrentino (who won a foreign-language Oscar in 2014 for The Great Beauty) will next shoot the movie Loro, about Silvio Berlusconi, the Italian media tycoon-turned-prime minister.
As the title suggests, The New Pope will be following a new papacy and as such the original cast, including Jude Law, are not expected to reprise their roles.
