Law Enforcement United Tour rides 250 miles honoring fallen officers

He spoke outside the U.S. Capitol at the National Peace Officers' Memorial Service.

"Because of these things that do happen to law enforcement officers, it gives your occupation meaning in the sense that the community depends on you even to the point of losing our life, and I think you've got to be willing to do that, if you truly are honest about being a police officer, you have to know that that's a possibility, and you've got to be willing to know that when you go out, you could potentially lose your life", he said.

"This memorial here and this opportunity we have today reminds us of the thin blue line-that symbol which represents the important relationship between law enforcement and our community as the protectors of fellow civilians from those who seek to harm them", said Congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard. And as "National Police Week" continues, WTXL is remembering two South Georgia officers who lost their lives while serving their communities.

The event included music and prayers and a proclamation from Washington Mayor Joe Wellman noting that 135 officers died in the line of duty past year including one police officer in Howard County.

The Shenandoah American Legion Color Guard fired a volley salute at the end of a prayer service and procession marking National Peace Officer Memorial Day.

Vice President Mike Pence had said Trump makes "no apologies" for his unwavering backing of police, and Trump added: "I will always support the incredible men and women of law enforcement as much as you have always supported me".

Police officers from Lady Lake, Fruitland Park, Ocala and Wildwood took turns along with representatives from the Lake, Marion and Sumter County sheriff's offices reading the names of the 144 police officers and the 34 canine killed in the line of duty in 2016 as part of the Peace Officers Day held Monday at The Veterans Memorial Park of the Villages.

"I was 24-years-old when my father was killed in 1985", Mrs. Terry-Lancaster said.

This week is National Police Week and honors police officers across the country. Events like the National Day for fallen officers are special for the people that go through that.

"It starts with disbelief, when you hear those words officer down", said Demps.

The sculpture would pay tribute to all fallen officers and their families.

"As president, my highest duty is to keep America safe..."

The president is also requesting American flags fly at half-staff to memorialize fallen officers.

Hawaiʻi Law Enforcement Memorial Foundation's service to remember Hawaii's sixty-five officers who died in the line of duty.

"The rest of the nation and the world was looking, and we became the type of department known for standing up in the face of great tragedy", said Chief Aziz. In humble appreciation of our hard-working law enforcement officers, Melania and I will light the White House in blue on May 15.
