UK Labour leader accuses Theresa May of 'pandering' to Trump

Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn speaking about national security and foreign policy at Chatham House in London

May was the first world leader to visit Donald Trump after his inauguration, and has stressed the importance of the trans-Atlantic "special relationship" to global security.

The UK has been participating in airstrikes against ISIS targets in Syria since 2015.

"The new US President seems determined to add to the dangers by recklessly escalating the confrontation with North Korea, unilaterally launching missile strikes on Syria, opposing President Obama's nuclear arms deal with Iran and backing a new nuclear arms race".

"The best defence for Britain is a government actively engaged in seeking peaceful solutions to the world's problems", he said.

"But I am not a pacifist".

Corbyn opposed military action in Iraq and Afghanistan among other recent conflict and will use his speech to brand the so-called War on Terror a failure.

"But that is very far from the kind of unilateral wars and interventions that have nearly become routine in recent times".

"If we get to June 8 and (Conservative leader Theresa May) still commands the lead in the polls she had at the start of the election, she will command a Margaret Thatcher style majority", said Watson, referring to the 140- and 100-seat landslides the Conservatives won in 1983 and 1987.

At a glance, Labour's manifesto includes scrapping tuition fees and zero-hours contracts, renewing Trident, building 100,000 new council houses per year and renationalising the United Kingdom rail network, energy companies and Royal Mail.

Corbyn insisted that wars that sought regime change in Afghanistan Iraq, Libya, and Syria - and Western interventions in Afghanistan, Somalia and Yemen - "have failed in their own terms, and made the world a more unsafe place".

Several Polish left-wing parties and groups, including the Democratic Left Alliance (SLD) party and the Polish Socialist Party, have signed the statement, coming out strongly in support of a Labour government led by Jeremy Corbyn. "And pandering to an erratic administration will not deliver stability", he said.

Labour's programme of reform is significantly more popular among voters than the party's leader Jeremy Corbyn, a new poll suggests.

He added: "Britain deserves better than simply outsourcing our country's security and prosperity to the whims of the Trump White House".

In a major speech in London, Mr Corbyn said there would be "no more hand-holding" with President Trump if he was in Downing Street.
