Capitals replace Holtby in goal for 3rd period of Game 2

The Capitals stars did not.

The Washington Capitals host the Pittsburgh Penguins in Game 2 of the second round series on April 29 at 8:00 PM EST. Those private discussions often had the desired response with Washington winning the games immediately after them. "I thought some of the goals.he wasn't as sharp as he can be for us". "He's a game-changer for us, and so when he didn't change the game I just looked to change the mojo there a little bit, that's all".

Fleury hasn't been the Penguins' backbone, serving as the backup to Matt Murray during their Stanley Cup run past year and splitting the duties with the young goalie this season.

Grubauer allowed goals to Kessel and Evgeni Malkin early in the third, but the Penguins continued to pour it on and got an empty-netter from Guentzel in the final minute.

Was it a smart move to pull Holtby?

"We can't get frustrated".

The Capitals began the final period trailing 3-1 after Holtby allowed a short-handed goal to Matt Cullen, then a pair of scores set up by Crosby. But Cullen, who had four goals and six points in Pittsburgh's Stanley Cup run previous year, is once again playing an essential part to the Penguins' success.

They really didn't get much of a chance, though, as Kessel slid into that right wing spot for much of the first period. His next two goals allowed the Senators to erase a 5-3 Rangers lead late in the third and force overtime, which he then ended with this awesome shot.

The Capitals responded quickly.

WASHINGTON-It's probably not a stretch to call Saturday night's playoff game the biggest in Alex Ovechkin's National Hockey League career. For the second game in a row, the Capitals had a huge lead in shot attempts (89-40).

For the second game, Washington majorly out-shot the Penguins. Holtby, who entered the playoffs with the best playoff save percentage of any active goaltender and is a finalist for his second Vezina Trophy, has been ineffective. In a game against the Boston Bruins in December, Washington squandered a three-goal lead before prevailing in overtime.

That's as big a game as Washington will face as just 18 of the previous 87 teams to lose the first two in a best-of-seven series have come back to win, according to the Elias Sports Bureau.

That marked the end of Holtby's night after two periods as the 2016 Vezina Trophy victor was again not at his best as Fleury stole the show.

After failing to open the scoring in an otherwise dominant first period, Washington surrendered three goals in the second, as the Penguins broke it wide open with their transition game, led by two great plays from Sidney Crosby.

"Sometimes you need to hear from your teammates more than you need to hear from your coach", forward T.J. Oshie said.

"Playoffs are made of big moments", the goalie explained, per Brian McNally of 106.7 The Fan. "That's where your goalie needs to come up with a save", Holtby said. We were very together with what we said.

A Washington win in Game 3 could take a lot of pressure and stress off them and feed into better games. Saturday night was a frustrating continuation of dominating the Penguins without reaping a reward. Sullivan called Fleury the Penguins' best player, and even with Crosby's four points through two games he's not wrong.

Fleury shined in Game 1 with a 33-save performance, and he was well on his way to stealing the Penguins a second game after he stopped all 16 shots he saw in the first period. Fleury has allowed four goals on 71 shots (0.944 save percentage).

He has now been the difference for Pittsburgh in this series as Washington's net has been leaky.
