Oliver, a six-year veteran of the department, fired multiple rounds from a rifle at the teens' vehicle.
Last year, Tulsa, Oklahoma police officer Betty Shelby shot and killed Terence Crutcher in the middle of a roadway.
Jordan's family expressed gratitude that Oliver was sacked but said in a statement "there remains a long road ahead" toward justice. He and the other teenagers chose to leave the unruly party when they heard gunshots and police arriving, Edwards' family attorney Lee Merritt said. "It should be on the District Attorney's office".
According to the Dallas Police Department, the vehicle Edwards was in drove away from police when it was ordered to stop, and the officers encountered the auto as they were responding to gunshots in the area. 'The incident is recent and still being investigated.
"The bond that he shared with his family, particularly his siblings, was indescribable". The teenager's brothers "witnessed firsthand" what happened, Merritt said. "Their young lives will be forever altered".
Earlier Tuesday, the family asked the community to refrain from marching or protesting in his name. A YouCaring account has been set up for those who want to financially help the family. But Crockett credited Haber for moving quickly to correct the police department's mistaken statement and fire the officer the department said was responsible.
"What we desire only second to having our beloved Jordan back, is Justice for Jordan", the family's statement read. "This shouldn't happen to him", said Chris Cano, whose son played football with Edwards. Police arrived and found a party. They went inside a house where a party was underway. They heard gunshots and ran outside.
Originally, Haber said when officers arrived on the street, they heard gunfire and a auto filled with passengers backed towards them in reverse. Edwards was shot in the head and died. Officers yelled for the driver to stop, but he didn't. "I unintentionally [was] incorrect when I said the vehicle was backing down the road, in fact I can tell you that I do have questions in relation to my observation [of] the video", Haber told a news conference. In a rush to get the information out, to be transparent. That's all on me. "I missed a step".
The original police statement about the shooting said officers responded to a report of "several underage kids drunk walking around". One of them opened fire at the vehicle as it was moving, killing Edwards.
"They're moving in the right direction, however it's not almost enough", she said.
Merritt said there was no alcohol found in the auto and no evidence that the passengers had been drinking. According to Lee Merritt, an attorney for the Edwards family, Oliver is already attempting to appeal the decision.
They converged on the teenagers' vehicle when they heard "multiple gunshots", police said. The officers said they heard gunshots and a vehicle backed down the street toward them "in an aggressive manner" when they opened fire.
The Dallas County district attorney's office and Sheriff's Department are investigating the shooting. The full text of the family's press statement is included below.
Officials identified the officer as Roy Oliver, and said he had been with the department since July 2011.
"As law enforcement approached the house, they saw the lights".
According to state records released Wednesday, 31 of the department's 39 officers are white.
