Two people died when an incoming cargo plane swerved off the runway at a West Virginia airport and went over a hillside, officials said on Friday.
Airport spokesman Mike Plante told the news station that the Air Cargo Carrier plane struck a hillside as it was landing Friday morning.
No names have been released.
West Virginia American Water says it is monitoring the crash site for fuel leaks into a tributary of the nearby Elk River and is in contact with state and local crews.
Yeager Airport in Charleston, WV is closed through at least Saturday after the crash and all air traffic is being diverted to other airports. The weather in Charleston was sunny and clear.
He said there is nothing particularly hard about landing at the airport, which has a tarmac with a length on par with major airports in NY and Chicago. The National Transportation Safety Board is investigating and planned a news conference Friday evening.
"As we attempt to learn more about the situation, we are keeping the crew involved in our heartfelt thoughts", UPS said in a statement.
Authorities on scene say the Short 330 aircraft, contracted by UPS, came in "too hot" sideways and hit the runway and then rolled and went sideways down a hill. The proposal calls for lengthening the runway from about 6,800 feet to 8,000 feet.
United Airlines said it canceled all flights into and out of the airport Friday.
