Afghan forces fire at census team in Chaman

A Pakistani civilian was killed and 17 others injured in cross-border shelling and firing from Afghanistanon Friday, police said.

Since 30th April, Afghan Border Police has been creating hurdles in conduct of census in divided villages of Killi Luqman and Killi Jahangir in Charnan area on Pakistani side of the border, read an ISPR statement.

"This was done despite the fact that Afghan authorities had been informed well in advance, and coordination was carried out through diplomatic and military channels to conduct the census", Ghafoor said.

In aftermath of the abrupt attack by Afghan forces, security at Quetta-Chaman road has been beefed up to prevent any possible terror movement.

"Dialogue is the only political means available to us to establish peace in Afghanistan", Zakaria said.

Kandahar police spokesman Zia Durani told TOLOnews that the clash started at around 4am on Friday morning when Pakistani border forces entered the Afghan territory.

Mortar shells that hit two house in a village near Chaman border left one dead and seven, including three children injured.

"The recent video of a Kashmiri youth tied to an Indian army jeep as a human shield against the stone pelting young people has put India's claims of democracy to shame, he said". At least three children were among the injured, he had said. TV footage showed injured were being treated at a local hospital.

Afghan security officials told VOA a civilian was killed on their side while a border police personnel was wounded.

The minister strongly condemned firing incident, initiated by the Afghan forces. On the Afghan side, officials reported six killed in the incident, a significant escalation of hostilities between the two neighbors. There has been no confirmation about Ghani's refusal from Pakistan's side thus far.

Meanwhile, the political administration said that a curfew was implemented in Khyber Agency following the exchange of fire at Torkham Border.

Earlier this year, Pakistan shut border crossings after a spate of attacks it blamed on militants from over the border.

After the incident, Bab-e-Dosti at Pak-Afghan border has been closed for any kind of transportation, and trade activities have been suspended.

The border points were opened after a month on the orders of the prime minister after millions of dollars were lost in trading and business between the two countries.
