One of the witnesses who had been at the pool at the time the shooting began told local reporters that there had been a birthday party and although none of the guests seemed to recognize Selis, the birthday boy invited him to join the celebration.
The shooting was reported shortly after 6 p.m. Sunday, at what Zimmerman described as a large party.
Police shot and killed a 49-year-old man suspected of shooting seven people Sunday at a birthday pool party in an apartment complex near the University of California, San Diego, authorities said.
It is unknown if the incident was a hate crime.
In fact, the shooter laid on a lounge chair in the La Jolla Crossroads apartment complex pool area and called up his ex-girlfriend to tell her he had just shot two people, Zimmerman said.
The victims were identified as four African American females with gunshot wounds, two African American males with gunshot wounds, one Hispanic male with gunshot wounds and one African American male with a broken arm sustained while fleeing the area. "You can either leave or you can stay here and die", Wong said she heard Selis say. Zimmerman said the motive for the shooting remained unclear, and it was unclear whether Selis knew any of the victims. She said family of Selis interviewed by police described him as "distraught and depressed" over a recent breakup, but "they had no idea he would resort to violence, let alone shooting at innocent victims".
"There is zero information to indicate race played a role", Zimmerman said.
Adding, 'These victims were just in his presence at the wrong place at the wrong time when he committed this awful tragedy'.
"It is apparent that Selis wanted his ex-girlfriend to listen in as he carried out his rampage", Zimmerman told a news conference.
Adding, 'It was really hot outside and he had on kind of a jacket and a T-shirt under the jacket and some cargo shorts.
Investigators have not found any notes or evidence in his internet search history to suggest that Selis planned the shooting, Ahearn said.
Police officers stand guard in front a La Jolla apartment building after a shooting Sunday, April 30, 2017, in San Diego. The gunman was shot and killed by police.
"Six or seven minutes later it's just pow, pow, pow, pow - out of nowhere", Phillips said.
Selis was reportedly facing financial turmoil before the shooting with roughly $100,000 in medical and credit card debt and a bankruptcy filing in 2015.
Of note, prior to Sunday's shooting, Selis, a local service technician at a vehicle dealership had no known criminal record, with the man's actions shocking those close to him.
"There is zero info to indicate that race played a factor in this bad and horrific crime", Zimmerman said.
"Our hearts go out to all the victims, their families and anyone who witnessed this tragic event", the chief said. Selis used a.45 caliber Sig Sauer, which was registered in his name. Selis wrote in the same filing that he worked as a mechanic at Mossy Ford, a dealership in San Diego, since at least 2010. He listed his occupation as auto mechanic, according to a petition filed in US Bankruptcy Court in the Southern District of California.
The complex is located near the University of California San Diego campus.
