Battle for Berkeley: Will Ann Coulter spark another clash?

Violent riots erupted at UC Berkeley in February when conservative writer Milo Yiannopoulos was scheduled to speak

I'm speaking at Berkeley on April 27th, as I was invited to do and have a contract to do. "Apparently, that's what's going to happen with her, I think".

"That was clearly a subterfuge by Berkeley to make sure that the speech was allowed at a time and place when nobody was nobody was going to be able to attend it, and that defeats the entire goal", said BCR's attorney, Harmeet Dhillon. In the four-page letter, the attorney demands that the university find a venue near the center of campus for Coulter and allow her to speak in the evening rather than during the day. "And it's got to stop".

After days of absorbing criticism, it finally occurred to someone at the University of California Berkeley that announcing - a week in advance - the school administration's utter helplessness to protect an invited guest speaker was not a mark of leadership on this public university campus.

In addition to raising objections to Berkeley's decisions, several conservative sites also mocked Howard Dean for a tweet about the controversy in which he falsely claimed, "Hate speech is not protected by the first amendment". "At the same time, we respect and support Ms. Coulter's own First Amendment rights".

Reporters at the San Francisco Chronicle called half a dozen venues Thursday and none said they could or would host Coulter. "It doesn't mean 'shut up and agree with me'".

For Coulter, as for the many conservative publications that followed her lead, the sticking point was that the new date came, as Breitbart put it, "in a week when there are no classes at the college".

According to campus spokesman Dan Moguluf, campus police learned of plans to "target the appearance of Ann Coulter on campus". "We are concerned about her disregard for the assessment and recommendations of law enforcement professionals whose primary focus is the safety and well-being of our students and other members of our campus community".

"Everything we're doing is so the speaker and students can actually exercise their rights without disruption", Mogulof said.

In canceling Coulter's speech on Wednesday, UC Berkeley cited violence that broke out at the campus in February, hours before right-wing media personality Milo Yiannopoulos was scheduled to speak there. The incident prompted President Trump to weigh in on Twitter, apparently threatening to withhold federal funding from the university.

"First, I want to express how disappointed I am that counsel for UC Berkeley, of all institutions, would misgender me by addressing your letter to 'Mr.' Dhillon", the letter begins.

Berkeley, a longtime magnet for activists and an important hub during the free speech movement of the 1960s.
