The NCAA announced on Tuesday that Detroit and Little Caesars Arena will be the host for the 2020 Frozen Four and the 2021 NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament.
Over the past four tournaments (since 2014) nine different cities have hosted an NCAA Men's Ice Hockey Regional including and Cincinnati, Ohio (three times), Providence, R.I.
U-M will also host the 2019 and 2022 NCAA women's gymnastics regionals, the 2020 men's gymnastics championship, the 2021 field hockey championship, the 2022 women's golf regional and the 2022 water polo championship.
The DSC's proposal netted more than the Frozen Four. This is the second time that LCA has added March Madness games to its events schedule.
For Buffalo, it will be the second time it's hosting a Frozen Four, the last coming in 2003.
The 2018 Frozen Four had already previously been awarded to St. Paul, Minn. The 2019 regional will be held either March 29-30 or March 30-31, with the victor heading to the Frozen Four in Buffalo. Other schools in the tournament that year included Wisconsin and Mercyhurst.
Penn State will host the National Collegiate Fencing Championships on March 25-28, 2021 in the Multi-Sport Facility.
"This is an exciting day, not only for the City of Buffalo, but for Canisius, the MAAC and Niagara", Canisius Director of Athletics Bill Maher said.
Quinnipiac's TD Bank Sports Center celebrated its 10th Anniversary earlier this year. "Having the Frozen Four and NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament returning to this region is a testament to the incredible fan base in this area".
Meanwhile, Western New York also won the right to host an NCAA cross country event.
