Kenyans sweep Boston Marathon on a good day for US runners

She said it has always been her dream to return to the streets of Boston after making history there in 1967.

Two times former World marathon champion Edna Kiplagat is this year's Boston Marathon women's champion while Geoffrey Kirui has claimed his first major after winning the men's race in 2 hours, 09 minutes and 37 seconds.

Switzer's race was immortalized in photos of then race director Jock Semple taking to the course in an attempt to take her bib number away and stop her from running, noted the Boston Globe.

"He grabbed me... threw me back and said, "get the hell out of my race and give me those numbers"," she recalled.

It was the Boston Marathon yesterday, and it marks 50 years since an incredible event for runners and women everywhere.

In fact, CBS News caught up with Switzer later in the day as she took part in the marathon.

Women were finally officially allowed to enter the Boston Marathon in 1972. She started the nonprofit 261 Fearless in 2015, which uses running to empower women around the world.

Switzer now has a casual 39 marathons under her belt.

He was three seconds off his personal best, and that was past year on a much easier, faster course in Hartford, Connecticut.

Kiplagat, a 38-year-old mother of two, ran alone for the final miles of the race, finishing with in 2:21:52, nearly a minute ahead of Bahrain's Rose Chelimo. "It's going to be great", she told NESN. On Monday, Switzer hit the pavement wearing the same racing bib she wore during her 1967 run: 261. "It wasn't until a race official attacked me during the run did I become determined to finish and speak out on behalf of all women".

Another woman, Bobbi Gibb finished ahead of Switzer in the 1967 marathon, but she was not officially registered for the race.

"I was getting a little emotional, and it's not even the finish yet", said Wetherbee.

The emotion isn't hard to spot on Marathon Monday, as the athletes train hard and push through the pain the make sure they get their medal. "And that's why I keep pushing running".

Edna Kiplagat of Kenya was the victor with a time of 2:21:52.

Inspiring footage of an army veteran with a prosthetic leg carrying his friend over the Boston Marathon finish line was captured during Monday's race.

"It changed everything", she said.

This year, Beach crossed the line in 5:01:26.
