Boston Marathon retires Bib 261 for women's pioneer Switzer

Army Staff Sergeant Earl Granville is receiving a ton of attention, and rightfully so, for what he did during the Boston Marathon on Monday.

Mobility impaired athletes - the blind and those with prostheses or other challenges - started at 8:50 a.m. Monday.

Meb Keflezighi, who in 2014 became the first American to win the race in over three decades, finished 13th in his final Boston Marathon.

"I'm not sure how it can get any better than how everything went yesterday", race director Dave McGillivray said Tuesday at the annual day-after briefing.

The top US woman is Desi Linden, a two-time Olympian who's placed in the top 10 in Boston three times.

Security was high along the course, which begins in Hopkinton, Massachusetts, and passes through Boston's suburbs to the finish line, where a pair of ethnic Chechen brothers on April 15, 2013 set off two homemade bombs, killing three people and injuring more than 200.

With past victories in the Los Angeles, New York and London marathons under her belt, the 37-year-old Kiplagat won the Boston event on her first try, posting a time of 2:21:52.

Yesterday morning, wearing the very same number which was nearly ripped off her five decades earlier, the now 70-year-old Switzer completed the Boston Marathon for a ninth time.

"When I was running, my body was feeling good", said Kiplagat, who was greeted at the finish line by two of her children.

The warm temperatures that hit 79 degrees at the 20-kilometer mark in Natick slowed the runners, but the strong tailwind was a boost - especially in the wheelchair races.

"The wind is so important", Hug said.

All four ladies said it would be an honor to run it together.

Sanchez has no plans to scale his workouts back, and he sees more marathons in his future.
