Trump Advisers to Discuss Paris Agreement on Tuesday

"We need to stop burning dirty coal for the future of the planet, and increasingly, low-priced renewables like wind and solar are leading the way".

Bannon and Pruitt are said to be strongly opposed to remaining in the agreement, while Kushner and Tillerson are said to be in favor of staying.

Trump in the past has voiced skepticism about the deal.

The head of the Environmental Protection Agency has called for America to "exit" the Paris Climate Agreement.

But with the Paris accord, China said that, compared to 2005 levels, it would seek to cut its carbon emissions by 60 to 65 percent per unit of GDP by 2030.

While the Trump administration has backed away from the global leadership on climate change that President Obama pursued, other countries have embraced that role.

Trump and his administration are working to repeal almost all of Obama's climate agenda, including the Clean Power Plan, which represented the bulk of the policies to reach the goal. Given their apparent support for this agreement, it remains to be seen whether they will push back against Pruitt's remarks, potentially setting the White House up for yet another fight between centrist and conservative elements of the administration. In January, China's National Energy Administration outlined a plan to make massive investments in clean energy through 2020, even as President Trump has focused nearly exclusively on supporting the fossil fuel industry.

Tuesday's meeting will mark the first time that senior advisers to the president have a formal discussion about Paris. That approach has won the endorsement of several major coal companies. "If the Trump administration truly wants to strengthen our economy and deliver a better deal to American families and businesses, it would follow through on its promise and pull out of the agreement altogether".

The agreement went into effect just before Election Day.

As part of the deal, the US pledged to reduce its emissions by between 26% and 28% from 2005 levels by 2025. The aides have also argued that remaining in the pact will give the US leverage to win greater support for technology that will reduce emissions from the use of coal and other fossil fuels.

Trump is expected to make a final decision on Paris by late May, when he and other world leaders will travel to Italy for a G7 summit.
