Panthers sign Pro Bowl DT Kawann Short to 5-year extension

The Carolina Panthers worked out a long-term deal with Pro-Bowl defensive tackle Kawann Short on Monday. Norman went on to play for the Washington Redskins and Carolina's young secondary took a massive step backwards. However, as contract site Spotrac points out, Short's first two years are better than nearly any defensive player in football, save for Von Miller and Olivier Vernon. We've all been told about how much Dave Gettleman values his hog mollies and pass rushers, but this deal really proved it.

"That means everything to put myself in this position", said Short, who said his goal is to become the top player at his position. The Panthers obviously wanted him to be all in for the offseason program, which opens this week.

"They believed in me from Day One", he said.

Short, who enters his fifth National Football League season in 2017, has 17 sacks in the past two seasons (2015-16), third-most among National Football League defensive tackles during that time. The Panthers really stuck to their guns with this one, locking in their best pass rushing tackle for the next five years.

Short, who turned 28 in February, has recorded 17 sacks over the past two seasons. Off the field, KK is a top-notch young man and great representative of our team.

"KK consistently affects the quarterback and is strong against the run", Panthers head coach Ron Rivera said. He was selected out of Purdue by the Panthers in the second round (44th overall) of the 2013 NFL Draft.

Restricted free agent guard Andrew Norwell, and exclusive rights free agents center Tyler Larsen and punter Michael Palardy signed their tenders Monday.
