News 17-Year-Old Girl Dies in Western Australia Following Shark Attack

The Federal Government says it will do whatever it takes to prevent shark attacks

The victim, a 17-year-old girl, was in a critical condition at the scene when ambulances arrived.

A 17-year-old girl has been killed by a shark in Western Australia.

The girl was surfing with her father at a surf break known as Kelp Beds when the attack took place at roughly 4pm local time.

It's understood her leg was badly mauled and she lost a lot of blood.

According to data from the Shark Research Institute, this is the eighth shark attack in Australian waters this year, and the first fatality. Patrols are being organized for the area to commence on Tuesday morning.

Officials have not released what type of shark attacked the teen, but there have been reported sightings of a medium-sized great white in the area. It's believed that it was the girl's mother, who was looking on from the shore, was the one to phone the emergency services. This resulted in the man losing this left arm and right hand.
