'Fate of the Furious' races to biggest global box office opening ever

In North America, Furious 8 opened to a strong $100.2 million, the second-biggest opening of the franchise behind Furious 7's $147 million. The film brought in $100.2 million domestically and also made headlines for its global and worldwide performance.

That was the humblebrag made by the Greater Cleveland Film Commission in an email to members Monday boasting about the box office debut of the filmed-in-Cleveland, "The Fate of the Furious". While that is far from being a record for the Fast and Furious franchise - its predecessor generated $140 million in the USA in a comparable period - the clincher has been the film's performance in China. where it has generated an astonishing $190 million in three days in cinemas.

"The Fate of the Furious", directed by F. Gary Gray and stars Vin Diesel, Dwayne Johnson, Jason Statham, Michelle Rodriguez, Tyrese Gibson, Chris Bridges, Nathalie Emmanuel, Kurt Russell, Scott Eastwood, Helen Mirren and Charlize Theron, will challenge its predecessor "Furious 7" which grossed a stunning 2.42 billion yuan (US$391 million) in China and also further challenged the highest grossing film ever in China, "Mermaid", which eventually grossed 3.39 billion yuan (US$517.3 million). According to Taran Adarsh, Fate of the Furious has minted 188.85 million in its opening weekend in China.

As the film commission notes in its email, that means three of the top 11 films with the biggest worldwide opening weekends were shot in Cleveland: "The Fate of the Furious" at No. 1, "Marvel's the Avengers" ($392.5 million in 2015) at No. 8 and "Spider-Man 3" ($381.7 million in 2007) at No. 11. The monstrous global debut drove the film to a $532.5 million three-day worldwide opening, the biggest ever, surpassing the $529 million record set by Star Wars: The Force Awakens in 2015.

Yet, the 100.2 million haul is still the second highest first-weekend domestic gross of the eight films in the series. The previous record holder was "Jurassic World", with $316.7 million.

In Mexico, the movie earned $17.8 million while grossing $17 million in the United Kingdom and Ireland.

The ninth and tenth instalments of "Furious" are planned for release in 2019 and 2021.

"Fast & Furious 8", debuted with $432.3 million internationally after bowing in 63 foreign markets.

"This is an astonishing feat for a decade and a half old franchise that launched as a marginalized auto culture movie with no stars and no imaginings of a long-term franchise future", said Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst at comScore.

"Beauty and the Beast" crossed the $1 billion mark worldwide this weekend. But here's the difference force awakens to not open in China at the same time and opened everywhere now it's a native experience did.
