As a way of explaining the range, Honda says the Clarity Electric is meant to be a "larger, more premium EV at an affordable price". I'm guessing the differences in model years - 2017 for the Electric and 2018 for the Plug-in Hybrid - indicates the order the two models will reach dealerships.
The 2018 Honda Clarity Plug-in Hybrid is driven by an electric motor rated at 181 horsepower and 232 lb-ft of torque, juiced by a 17-kWh battery pack.
It's what's under the skin that counts, and the Clarity is one of the most advanced cars Honda has ever built regardless of what fuels it. A 25.5-kWh lithium-ion battery pack is mounted under the floor and behind the rear seatbacks to preserve interior room, and trunk space benefits from not having to accommodate the Clarity Fuel Cell's thick-walled carbon-fiber hydrogen tank. After all, Honda wants two-thirds of its global sales to come from electric vehicles by 2030, and that's a goal that definitely requires some thoughtful moves. Pricing for the Clarity Electric and the Clarity Plug-In Hybrid will be released in the coming months.
The Clarity PHEV's all-electric range is expected to be 42 miles (68 km), which Honda says would be the most of any midsize PHEV auto sold in the USA, topping the Toyota Prius Prime and Hyundai Sonata PHEV's respective 25-mile (40-km) and 27-mile (43-km) all-electric range. The EV's AC electric motor matches the fuel-cell car's 221 lb-ft of torque but is down 13 horsepower, to 161.
All in, the Clarity Plug-in Hybrid is expected to earn an EPA estimate of 105 MPGe combined.
The vehicle provides three distinct driving modes including Econ, Sport, and Normal. The volume seller of the Clarity trio will be available in standard and Touring trim levels.
As for the Clarity Plug-in Hybrid model, Center said the vehicle is designed for those "wanting to take the next step in environmental performance", but still want range and fuel flexibility. Lease includes Roadside Assistance, up to $15,000 of hydrogen fuel, and up to 21 days Avis luxury rental vehicle. The Honda lineup includes the Fit, Civic, Accord and Clarity Fuel Cell passenger cars, along with the HR-V, CR-V and Pilot sport/utility vehicles, the Ridgeline pickup and the Odyssey minivan.
The electric Clarity is set to go on sale later this year in California and OR, with Honda promising "an attractive lease program" for the auto. Unlike the fuel cell auto, the plug-in hybrid Clarity will be available to buy or lease in all 50 states later this year at a price expected to be around $35,000. Past that point, the gasoline motor will generate electricity as well as propulsion for a total range of 330 miles. Even the Electric's availability seems reluctant, as it will only be sold in California and OR to begin.
