Texans to host draft party for Houstonians

If Clowney played the 2018 season without an extension, he would make $13.8 million.

National Football League teams have until May 3 to exercise the fifth-year options on 2014 first-round draft picks.

Texans defensive end Jadeveon Clowney (90) was a thorn in the side of Patriots quarterback Tom Brady on Saturday night.

The Texans picked up Clowney's fifth-year option for 2018 on Friday, according to multiple outlets, including the Houston Chronicle.

Clowney improved as a pass-rusher last season and became a force against the run for the NFL's leading defense in terms of total yardage allowed.

Clowney, who was the No. 1 selection in 2014, was entering the final season of his four-year rookie contract. Like the Rams' move to exercise Aaron Donald's option earlier this week, this was an entirely expected outcome. He was healthy last season, missing one game because of injury and being kept out of the last regular-season game to rest him for the playoffs.

The 2016 campaign was Clowney's best in the National Football League, as he registered career highs with 52 tackles and 6.0 sacks while appearing in 14 games.

This past season was clearly Clowney's finest, as he was selected for his first Pro Bowl and was named 2nd-team All-NFL.
