North Korea calls US strikes on Syria 'unforgivable'

The presidential office said National Security Adviser Kim Kwan-jin and his USA counterpart Herbert McMaster spoke on the phone for about 20 minutes Thursday morning.

The administration has made it clear that any threat to the USA and its allies will be met with an "overwhelming response".

Trump's actions on Syria could signal to Pyongyang that the new president isn't afraid of unilateral military steps, even if key nations like China are standing in the way.

"The reality of today shows that we must stand against power with power and it proves a million times over that our decision to strengthen our nuclear deterrence has been the right choice".

Despite the geopolitical tensions - only last week the UN Security Council condemned North Korea's latest missile launch - knots of spectators gathered along the route, cheering the runners on and exchanging high-fives with them.

Trump has said that if China doesn't exert more pressure on North Korea, the USA will act alone.

"Third Fleet ships operate forward with a goal: to safeguard U.S. interests in the Western Pacific", Commander Dave Benham, Director of Media Operations for the U.S. Pacific Command Third Fleet, told VOA.

The European Union on Thursday imposed additional sanctions on North Korea over nuclear and ballistic missile tests, which it said threatened global security.

The strike group, called Carl Vinson, includes an aircraft carrier and will make its way from Singapore toward the Korean peninsula, according to the official.

"We feel the increased presence is necessary", the unidentified official told Reuters.

Foreign Minister Fumio Kishida said Japan will continue to implement its policy of bilateral talks and sanctions against North Korea, Efe news reported.

"If we judge that they have perfected that type of delivery system, then that becomes a very serious stage of their further development", Tillerson said on ABC's "This Week", when asked if Trump would consider North Korea's development of an intercontinental missile a "red line".

"I told (President Trump) that Japan is watching closely how China will cope with this North Korean issue", Abe told reporters after the 35-minute conversation.
