A year ago 13,994 crashes in OH had a reported distraction, including 26 fatal crashes. The Wilton Police Department announced it will crack down on distracted driving with another "U Drive, U Text, U Pay" period from April 4 to April 30. Statistics show that is a 5 percent increase from 2015 to 2016 in the number of distracted drivers. Witnesses said the driver of the pickup was texting as he drifted across the center line and into the path of the bus, according to the San Antonio Express-News. The same drivers who describe texting and other risky behavior as unacceptable, also admit to engaging in it.

A phone must be mounted on the dash, the center console or one of the lower corners of the windshield to be legal, CHP officials said.

Beginning April 1 and running through April 21, the high-visibility law enforcement initiative will target motorists who engage in unsafe distracted driving behaviors such as talking on hand-held cell phones and sending text messages while driving. This is a recipe for a crash.

Always give driving your full attention. Text messaging is particularly unsafe as reaction times double when drivers read or send text messages.A driver texting at 55 miles per hour will lose sight of the road for almost five seconds, which is comparable to driving the length of a football field while blindfolded. Take care of it before or after your trip, not while you're behind the wheel.

Passengers can do a lot to help reduce the risk of distracted driving, too.
