It's been a confetti-laden year so far for Roger Federer.
Nadal has had an easier route to his fifth final in Miami, with a dominant 6-1, 7-5 win over Italian Fabio Fognini and another uncomplicated 6-2, 6-3 quarter-final win over the 13th-seeded American Jack Sock.
Nadal has had an interesting road to the final. "That's great news for me". The final score was of 7 to 6, 6 to 7 and 7 to 6. Then he faced his toughest opponent of the tournament in the next round, America's Jack Sock.
Said Nadal: "Fabio is a player who is able to combine great points with mistakes".
Federer, who sat out the second half of 2016 to recover from a knee injury, says rest will help him prepare for the French Open, which starts on 28 May.
Federer pinpointed his saving of break points in the first game and at 3-3 as crucial moments in the contest. The sixth-ranked Spaniard has been especially impressive on serve since getting bageled by Philipp Kohlschreiber in the first set of their third-round showdown, and his match against Fognini was no exception. The Manacori will fight for the title on Sunday against Roger Federer, who has only lost one match of the 18 that has disputed this season.
After this, Federer's path to victory went smooth. "I give him a present the first set". That set up a blockbuster round of 32 matches against Juan Martin del Potro. After fighting off two match points to get past tenth seeded Czech Tomas Berdych in the quarterfinal, Federer was pushed to a five-setter by Nick Kyrgios on Friday.
"So if it's Roger, going to be another one for both of us, and that's it".
The tennis was only part of the story, as the crowd backed Federer throughout the match to the point it became a distraction.
Federer has won the Roland Garros tournament once in 2009. That match was as close as it could've been, a long three setter where each set went to a tiebreaker.
As his forehand started to prove increasingly potent, Federer eventually converted his sixth break point - and third of the game - when a powerful cross-court stroke forced Nadal to net. Federer was 0-for-5 and Nadal was 0-for-4.
The reward for fourth seed Federer is another showdown with great rival Rafael Nadal on Sunday.
Federer and Nadal were both close to the top of their games during the opening set as they held their serves to keep things tight.
