New Jersey's population inched up by the barest of margins a year ago, continuing a almost three-decade trend that has seen the state grow at one of the slowest rates in the country, according to data released today by the U.S. Census Bureau. The census estimates there were 183,149 county residents in 2016.
Washtenaw County was the next highest, adding 3,862, also a 1% gain.

"We're still not attracting and retaining people in their child-bearing years", he said.
But at the same time, 17,346 people moved out of Wayne County to other places in the United States.
Part of Lopez's district, Delaware County, had one of the highest population losses in the state for 2010-2016: 5.1 percent.
