England calls up uncapped Gibson for Lithuania qualifier

The Tigers harboured high hopes that Maguire would become the club's first ever England global but he will now have to wait until the summer for the next opportunity to make his worldwide bow.

However, England are now short of options in defence as Gary Cahill is suspended for the World Cup qualifier at Wembley, while Phil Jones and Chris Smalling have dropped out with injuries.

Ben Gibson has been called up to the England squad for the first time.

'We have respectfully sent him back to his club and we will know more once he has had scans and an x-ray over the next 24-48 hours. "I don't think he's eager to change everything, it's just little things here and there", Dier added.

"In all internationals now there's no easy game and every team sets up to try and stop us, especially here at Wembley". He wants a camp where we express ourselves, play exciting football and grow as a team. "That's the key, to play with intensity and to move the ball quickly".

Dier also referenced the Westminster attack in central London on Wednesday and said England's players will "do everything" to honour those who died.

"It's an ambition of mine".

Dier said he did not hear the chanting from supporters in Germany, which was described as "disrespectful and disappointing" by English FA officials and widely condemned in the British media.

"I've always had qualities that a captain may have and I think I can do that job".

Manchester United's Smalling has an unspecified injury, and has been replaced by uncapped Middlesbrough defender Ben Gibson.

He believes having a younger man in charge with a wealth of worldwide playing experience at his disposal could be beneficial to a youthful England squad. "He's been getting a lot of praise for how he's been playing with Middlesbrough this season".
