IPhone 6s was the top-selling smartphone in the world previous year, beating its competitors like the Samsung (SSNLF) Galaxy S7, according to research from IHS Markit (INFO) .
According to IHS Markit smartphone shipment database, which keeps a record of quarterly shipment data of more than 350 mobile devices, iPhone 7 was the best seller in fourth quarter of 2016.

On the 21st, we also had Apple unveil its new product update with a new iPad, a new red iPhone 7 and 7 Plus, a new program called "Clips" to enable easier sending of videos (and compete head-on with Snap), new watchbands for the Apple Watch and a new iPhone SE model. For both generations, the smaller 4.7-inch versions sold better than the larger 5.5-inch Plus models.
Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge and S7 ranked fifth and ninth, respectively.
More broadly, Samsung smartphones claimed five of the top 10 spots on IHS Markit's top 10 most shipped smartphones of 2016.
Meanwhile, Samsung's S7 and S7 Edge were unveiled in February 2016. Similar to Samsung, Huawei continues to address multiple smartphone pricing segments - either with its own Huawei-branded handsets or with those of its sub-brand, Honor.
Samsung is gearing up to release its next flagship - the Galaxy S8 - next week which it hopes will boost its smartphone business. Zooming in on the premium pricing tier, Huawei's P9 numbered among IHS Markit's top 5 most shipped smartphone models past year.
Chinese manufacturer OPPO had one model on the top ten ranking.
