Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton to have surgery on throwing shoulder

The Carolina Panthers quarterback suffered that injury at some point during the regular season and played through it.

Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton will undergo surgery to fix a torn rotator cuff in his throwing shoulder, the team announced Tuesday. Original rehabilitation wasn't as productive as Dr. Connor had hoped it would be, leading him to recommend Mr. Newton undergo arthroscopic shoulder surgery.

A post on the Carolina Panthers' Twitter feed relayed the information that three players are going through surgery.

Vermillion elaborated on the injury to Newton's throwing shoulder, detailing what the Panthers did to try to help their star avoid surgery. For an National Football League quarterback, especially one who runs as much as Newton does, making sure your shoulders are healthy is critical to staying on the field.

Newton will have surgery after a treatment plan did not fix the problem. Additional offseason Panthers news has already included signing offensive guard Chris Scott, defensive tackle Kyle Love, and cornerback Teddy Williams to free agent contracts. But there is no doubt about Newton's status for Week 1 right now, and keeping that on track is all that matters to the Panthers.

Newton initially injured his shoulder in Week 14. Panthers head athletic trainer Ryan Vermillion is quoted below.

"Twelve weeks following surgery, Cam will begin an early throwing program with me. However, as we worked to advance him into the next stage - the strengthening stage, the throwing stage - he started to have an increase in his pain level and started having pain while throwing".

Newton is expected to miss organized team activities (OTAs) earlier in the summer, but is expected to be ready for training camp in late July. My Newton partially tore his rotator cuff in a week 14 game last season.

Byrd, 24, sustained the knee injury while working out on his own, and an MRI exam revealed torn lateral meniscus in his left knee.

Newton has missed just three games over his six year career, and this will be his second offseason surgery.
