Federer to face Sock after ailing Kyrgios withdraws

Stretched Novak Djokovic earned a code violation for smashing his racquet at the end of the first set

"I was 22 when I won my first major; he's (Kyrgios) still got time", Federer said, before highlighting the reason for his recent success against Nadal.

"I think about Fed and Rafa, the most unbelievable thing is both of them are still unbelievably motivated after all the time they've played to continue to play at this level", Gilbert said.

The Australian has shown glimpses of his talent in recent years, most notably when defeating former world number one Rafael Nadal and Richard Gasquet en route to the Wimbledon quarter-finals in 2014.

"I don't take this decision lightly, these are the matches we train for but I'm in no fit state to take to the court". Wednesday's match was just the fifth time they weren't opposing each other in a final.

The 36-year-old Federer needed only 34 minutes to win the first set, finishing it off with a serve-and-volley victor.

"I think the six months off a year ago was really hard", Federer said.

Australian Open champion Federer and big-serving Kyrgios have been the two most impressive players through the early rounds this week, and fans were anticipating a classic match. "And really, since this year, I feel super comfortable with the racquet, and I think I have also gained confidence stepping into it". Novak Djokovic's 19-match winning streak at the desert tournament ended in a 6-4 7-6 (3) loss to Nick Kyrgios.

"It wasn´t enough just to putting the ball in play".

In the women's draw, world No. 3 Karolina Pliskova reached the semi-finals after edging French Open champion Garbine Muguruza 7-6 (2), 7-6 (5). "I hope it's going to lead to something great for Nick that he realizes, you know, if he puts his head down and focuses that he can bring it, you know, day in and day out, week in and week out". The Australian youngster also has a 1-0 head-to-head advantage over Federer as he edged past the Swiss in a fiercely-contested Round of 32 clash at 2015 Madrid Masters 6-7 (2), 7-6 (5), 7-6 (12).

"That was the best thing I could have done, come back and be with the boys, and I found some enjoyment practicing again", he said.

Federer believes it was good to have a low-intensity match as he still has at least three more rounds to play if he goes all the way to the final. So Novak played two singles matches between Roger's two matches.
