Patriots trade for Dwayne Allen from Colts

NFL free agency tracker: Giants ink WR Brandon Marshall

ESPN's Adam Schefter reported the Colts acquired New England's fourth-round pick (137 overall) for Allen and the Colts' sixth-round selection (200 overall) this year. Bennett is coming off a highly productive 2016 campaign in which he caught 55 passes for 701 yards and seven touchdowns.

Dwayne Allen reportedly has been traded to the New England Patriots.

Allen became expendable in Indianapolis when the Colts re-signed Jack Doyle to a three-year, $19 million contract on Tuesday.

The 27-year-old posted a career-high 45 receptions for 521 yards as a rookie in 2012. He's struggled with various injuries since, sitting out all but one game in 2013 with a hip injury and then missing eight games over the past three years with various ailments.

The New England Patriots have done it again.

The analysis from those producing content on Colts.com does not necessarily represent the thoughts of the Indianapolis Colts organization.

The tweets hit the internet the night before the NFL's free agency signing period is set to begin. Despite the Colts' struggles last season, Luck led his offense to 2.8 touchdowns per game, which was ninth-most in the NFL.

With last year's starting nose tackle David Parry facing multiple felony charges after his recent arrest in Arizona, the Colts could have an even more pronounced need there.

At tight end, the Patriots also have Rob Housler under contract, and they tendered exclusive rights free agent Matt Lengel yesterday.

The Allen trade comes out pretty close to win-win territory, if the Colts were finished with him. But don't worry, Patriots fans: Allen has no hard feelings about that 2015 game - he never did.
