Letter to the editor: Defunding Planned Parenthood bad health policy
The White House confirmed the deal offer in a statement to the Times.
He added: "There is an opportunity for organizations to continue the important work they do in support of women's health, while not providing abortion services".
Even throughout his campaign, Trump's comparatively "open-minded" stance on Planned Parenthood was attributed to his daughter.
Over 2.5 million people come through Planned Parenthood's doors each year, 80 percent of whom are seeking preventative care, rather than abortion services.
During one of the presidential debates candidate Donald Trump said, "Millions and millions of women - cervical cancer, breast cancer - are helped by Planned Parenthood".
Apparently that only applies to male health care; women need to be told from whom they can get critical cancer screenings, STD treatment, family planning counseling, birth control and more, whereas men can get a prescription for little blue pills from any healthcare provider they choose.
On Monday, Trump pledged that he would be willing to guarantee Planned Parenthood's federal funding if the organization agreed to stop providing abortions.
Joni Ernst, a Republican senator, argues to defund Planned Parenthood because she has seen videos in which fetal organs were being harvested post abortion. Refusing to back down from its commitment to women's choice, Planned Parenthood is now at risk of losing almost 40 percent of its funding-and is calling for a massive mobilization to resist the attack on women's health.
But no federal money is spent on abortion services, which only take up 3 per cent of Planned Parenthood's total budget, and the health service was quick to condemn the informal offer as a thinly veiled threat.
Considering there are laws in place that prevent federal funds from being used to conduct abortions, Planned Parenthood officials have maintained that those funds are used for its other health services, such as cancer screenings and contraception. Planned Parenthood, like every other doctor's office or hospital, is reimbursed for the care they provide to patients who rely on public health programs like Medicaid.
"We are not the federal government, nor do we have the resources of the federal government", he said.
The provision would essentially defund Planned Parenthood, which receives $500 million in federal money, if it continues providing abortion services.
Planned Parenthood has seven Maryland centers, including one in Frederick.
Politicians are renewing their attacks on reproductive health care at a time when we've made historic progress. She said that she had no problem with the proposal because her opposition to Planned Parenthood lies with its abortion work.
There are 13,000 FQHC's nationwide and outnumbers Planned Parenthood clinics by 20 to 1.
