Heaviest woman loses 120kg after surgery in Mumbai hospital

Eman Ahmed Abd El Aty

An Egyptian believed to be the world's heaviest woman has successfully undergone weight-loss surgery in India, doctors said Thursday.

The name of the women is Eman Ahmed Abd El Aty, who previously weighed around 500 kilos, had not left her house in Egypt in over two decades until arriving for Mumbai.

Eman has been in hospital since early February when she was moved out of her home for the first time in 25 years by removing the wall from her room, and a crane to lift her out of her bed.

Eman Ahmed, after her first laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy surgery, is able to sit.

"The future course of action for the medical team working on her will be to correct all her associated medical problems, to get her fit enough to fly back to Egypt as soon as possible", the hospital said, adding that the patient is now in post-op care and that more updates will be shared in due course.

Last month, her surgeon had indicated that it would take several months of physical therapy for Mrs. Abd El Aty to muscle.

"Eman has lost over 100kg and has been shedding weight gradually on a daily basis with all the treatment and support", a spokeswoman for Dr. Muffazal Lakdawala, who has been leading the treatment, told AFP.

The patient had arrived in Bombay last month to undergo bariatric surgery to reduce the size of her stomach.

She was born weighing a staggering 11 lbs and was shortly diagnosed afterwards with the parasitic disease called Elephantiasis.

However, Dr Lakdawala told the BBC in December that he believed Ms Abd El Aty did not have elephantiasis but suffered from obesity-related lymphoedema which causes very big swelling of the legs.

Eman Ahmed Abd El Aty underwent weight los surgery this week.

. With 400 kilos, she is far ahead of the current holder of the title, the American Pauline Potter, weighed to 293 kilos last July according to the Guinness Book of Records. At the age of 11, she suffered a stroke and was left bedridden.

Eman went through Bariatric surgery which is a stomach-shrinking bypass procedure carried out on those wanting to lose excessive weight.
