911 calls for some AT&T customers restored

Consumers will soon regain the legal right to unlock their mobile devices

'The @FCC will investigate the root cause of the outage and its impact, ' Chairman Ajit Pai tweeted Wednesday night.

All service was restored by about 10:30 p.m. Wednesday, AT&T announced on Twitter.

According to the Associated Press, a spokesman for AT&T said that the company is aware of service issues.

AT&T informed customers on Twitter who were sharing their frustration over the outage that it was working on the issue and hoped to have it resolved soon.

AT&T customers making calls to 911 may here it ringing but it may not be going through, said Jennifer Armendariz with Eddy County Emergency Services. The issue was part of a nationwide problem with the phone company. "This is only for AT&T customers - others should call 911".

March 8 Some customers of US wireless carrier AT&T were unable to use their cell phones to dial 911 emergency dispatchers in their area for a time on Wednesday, a problem the company later said has been resolved.

There's no word so far on what caused the problem. In many cases, police and sheriff's departments provided an alternate phone number for residents to use in case of an emergency.

More than 27,000 calls per hour are made to 911 on average, according to the Federal Communications Commission.

For almost three hours, various law enforcement and government agencies in Texas and other states around the US reported trouble with the service. @FCC public safety staff are investigating.

"Every call to 911 must go through", Pai said in a statement.
