Cholera kills 110 people in Somalia

Somalia drought crisis 110 people dead from hunger in 2 days says PM

Four countries, four crises.

At least 110 people including children and elderly have died because of hanger and water-brone diseases Somalia declared yesterday.

Around 363,000 acutely malnourished children "need urgent treatment and nutrition support, including 71,000 who are severely malnourished", the US Agency for International Development's Famine Early Warning Systems Network recently warned.

"It is a hard situation for the pastoralists and their livestock".

Mohamed Hassan Fiqi, Minister of Agriculture for south-west state in Somalia, said the cholera situation was out of control and requested emergency aid from the government and global community. "Some people have been hit by [hunger] and diarrhoea at the same time", Khaire's office said in a statement.

"About 110 people have died in the past 48 hours due to drought and severe water-related diarrhea in southern Somalia, especially in the Bay and Bakool areas", Khaire said in a statement released on Saturday.

The UN humanitarian appeal for 2017 for Somalia is $864 million to provide assistance to 3.9 million people.

People are facing food insecurity, and many cases of dehydration and diarrhea have been reported.

The drought has led to a spread of acute watery diarrhea, cholera and measles, and almost 5.5 million people are at risk of contracting waterborne diseases.

There is the additional threat of cholera and other diseases due to lack of clean water in many areas, United Nations experts said, with some deaths from cholera having already been reported.

According to joint report by the U.N. and the United States Agency for International Development, starvation killed nearly 258,000 people between 2010 and 2012 in Somalia.

An on-going war with the Islamist group, al-Shabaab, coupled with a nearly three-year drought has almost crippled the country's economy - leading to the present day's starvation.
