Luis Enrique's departure brings uncertainty to Barcelona

"It's evident that there are some clubs with a bigger impact than others".

Messi also hit the bar from a trademark free-kick before the five-time World Player of the Year was rested for the final half hour as he was replaced by Andre Gomes.

"Luis Enrique leaves as he has always been, faithful to who he is: unpredictable and indomitable", said Barcelona-based newspaper Sport.

"It was a very hard decision for me, very well-thought out", the 46-year-old former Spain worldwide said. "After this season it will be good for me to get some rest".

Barcelona moved top of La Liga on the night Luis Enrique confirmed he will not continue as coach next season as Gareth Bale was sent-off in Real Madrid's thrilling 3-3 draw at home to Las Palmas.

In this season's meeting at Molinon, Barcelona cruised towards 0-5 victory.

Barca are one point clear at the top of the standings and with fixtures against title rivals Real Madrid and Sevilla to come their hopes of lifting a third La Liga crown under the coach are in their own hands.

Luis Enrique said he told the club during the pre-season that he was considering not returning after his contracted expired at the end of this season. Luis Enrique said he would have no say in picking his successor.

"Luis Enrique has brought us great success and he can still bring us more".

He was jeered by the crowd at the Camp Nou in a league game shortly after the defeat in Paris.

Suarez told Barcelona's official website: 'It has surprised us a little, we didn't expect it but it is an understandable decision and one that we accept.

The former Celta Vigo boss led Barcelona to the treble in the 2014-15 season, along with an additional La Liga and Copa Del Rey title each. During his three years in charge he has collected a total of eight trophies - including the Champions League - but feels that he has taken the Catalan giants as far as they can go.

"The way I do this job is why I have to leave. The players are motivated to make sure that happens".

Another rumored candidate is Ernesto Valverde, now with Athletic Bilbao.

'We are in a hard situation, especially in one competition, but with the help of everyone and if the stars align, we can turn that game around.

It's not out of the realm of possibility that Luis Enrique's announcement could have a similar effect - even if their chances in the Champions League this season may already have evaporated.

"Now we depend on us even though we have very hard matches left".
