Microsoft announces Skype Lite, an app created to run under slow connections

Skype Lite for Android Launched What It Is How It Works and Everything Else You Need to Know

Nadella said it will ensure Microsoft services support Aadhaar both for business-to-business and consumer services. The company launched an app called Skype Lite in 2009 as its first entry onto Android and Java phones, but that product was retired sometime later.

The tech company has launched a lighter version of Skype video and voice calling service that enables users to run the application from their low-end smartphones. Skype has integrated the feature for Skype Lite wherein all your SMS, promotional SMS and Skype messages can be combined in the same app and segregated for ease of access.

If you want to give the app a try, you can download Skype Lite for Android right now using the APK file and keep in mind that it supports Android 4.0.3 and newer. The app will be available to download starting today in the Google Play Store.

"Skype Lite is the new Skype built for India that meets your daily communication needs with your friends, family, and groups".

After Facebook Lite and YouTube Lite (which is dubbed YouTube Go), it is now Microsoft's turn to roll out a 2G-friendly version of Skype in India.

The app similar to Facebook Lite was built in Hyderabad development centre of Microsoft and tested with the consumers in India. So, a caller's credentials - say, in the course of an online job interview - can be verified through their Aadhaar number and an OTP during the call and the data is wiped out once the session is over. The new Skype Lite is created to suite seven different Indian Languages namely Hindi, Gujarati, Bengali, Marathi, Tamil, Telegu, and Urdu.

Microsoft recently unveiled Skype Lite, a lightweight version of Skype that is optimized for poor connectivity areas.

The new app also takes advantage of the India Stack, a bunch of APIs that allow governments and businesses to make their services available securely to Indian citizens. However, it's unlikely that the app won't make its way to other regions as well. Interestingly, the app integrates with Aadhaar IDs, to use it for user authentication.

Previously being tested as Skype Mingo, Skype Lite consumes less than 13 MB space and is targeted at the vast Android phone base in India and can be authenticated using Aadhaar and will be availalble in nine Indian languages.

Like Outlook's interface, the new Skype segregates the promotion messages and important messages.

At the keynote, Mircosoft also showed off Kaizala, a messaging and collaboration app that is being used by several Indian government bodies, including the government of Andhra Pradesh.
