Officer killed, another wounded in Southern California

A Whittier police officer was killed and another officer and a gunman were wounded in a shooting Monday morning, officials said.

Paramedics dispatched at 8:17 a.m.to Colima Road and Mar Vista Street rushed three people to an area hospital, where their conditions were not immediately known, according to a county fire department dispatcher.

"When they got the call, it was just a traffic accident and they didn't know what they had", Corina told reporters. When police arrived, the suspect started firing, according to Corina. Lt. John Corina of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department told the Associated Press the two officers were approaching the vehicle when they were shot by an alleged gang member driving a stolen auto.

Aerial images showed the shattered driver side window of a Whittier police cruiser and a rifle on the trunk of another auto.

An investigation was underway after three people, including two officers, were shot in Whittier on February 20, 2017.

A long gun was seen on the trunk of another vehicle, a silver sedan with heavy damage to its front. The surviving officer and suspect are now in stable condition, according to Corina.
