Azerbaijan's arms imports 20 times higher than Armenia's in 2012

Global weapons sales highest since end of Cold War

The volume of global major weapons transfers has been growing continuously since 2004, according to new data from the Stockholm worldwide Peace Research Institute (SIPRI).

It notes that the United States and Russian Federation remained the main exporters in this country in period from 2012 to 2016, Oxu.Az reports citing TASS. A new report has revealed that sale of major weapons systems has seen a significant rise since 2012, which can be attributed to the rise of terrorism and civil unrest in various parts of the world. Although at lower rates, the majority of other states in the region also increased arms imports.

Almost one-half of the US total sales went to the Middle East.

The US remained the world's biggest arms exporter, accounting for 33 percent of all weapons sold in the five years through 2016, the study found. Russian Federation is the second largest supplier, while China took third place.

She said the recent crash in oil prices will inevitably lead to a decline in arms trade in the region.

"India was the world's largest importer of major arms in 2012-16, accounting for 13 per cent of the global total", the leading think-tank said. Their share in a total volume of global arms exports accounted for 33 %.

Between 2007-11 and 2012-16, arms imports by states in the Middle East rose by 86% and accounted for 29% of global imports in the last five years.

The volume of world arms trading increased by 8.4 percent compared with the 2007-2011 period, the study by the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI) said.

SIPRI data reflects the volume of deliveries of arms, not the financial value of the deals. "The weight of the USA in the global arms trade is so big that it's enough to shape the trend", said Aude Fleurant, the director of SIPRI's arms and military expenditure program. About 47% of all USA weapons exports made in the five-year period end up in these areas.

From the period 2007 to 2011, to the period 2012 to 2016, it increased its arms imports by 43 per cent.

"The tensions in the Middle East have been going on for a number of years, and it is fuelling the procurement", Fleurant explained. Riyadh bought weapons mostly from the U.S. and the United Kingdom, the report said.

The US was the top arms exporter for 2012 - 16, selling 21% more than in the previous five-year period. In general, over the past five years, the United States have supplied their weapons to at least 100 countries.
