What next for Tamil Nadu and Edappadi Palaniswami

Chief Minister Edappadi K Palanisamy after taking the oath of secrecy administered by Governor CH Vidyasagar Rao during the swearing-in ceremony at Raj Bhavan in Chennai

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Edappadi Palaniswami won the trust vote as 122 MLAs voted for him while 11 backed former chief minister O Panneerselvam.

"This was done deliberately and intentionally, completely ignoring my official status as the Leader of Opposition", Stalin said to reinforce the charge of the DMK that there seemed to be undue pressure mounted on the MLAs of AIADMK. The lone Indian Union Muslim League member, KAM Muhammad Abubacker, will also be voting against the motion.

Considering the surging violence in the assembly, police immediately interrupted to protect the speaker and ordered the watch and ward staff to remove the DMK members.

Palaniswami belongs to the AIADMK faction led by party General Secretary VK Sasikala, who is in jail. Protesters hurled chairs, tore off documents in demand for a secret ballot, disturbing the decorum and discipline of the House.

While the commotion in the Tamil Nadu Assembly over trust vote continues to shock many, it was the case of two torn shirts that resulted in a ruckus. Minister KA Sengottayan was appointed as the floor leader of the Tamil Nadu assembly to monitor and manage the floor test proceedings.

Addressing media persons after a meeting of the DMK MLAs today, Stalin said the floor test on Saturday was against the rules and the party will take legal action. This was the aftermath of the speaker refusing a secret ballot and then ordering a voice vote for the motion.

Palaniswami needs the support of 118 of the Assembly's 234 legislators or MLAs to win the trust vote.

DMK legislators gheraoed and heckled Speaker Dhanapal, demanding secret ballot.

In edited visuals aired on local channels, DMK lawmakers were seen around the speaker's chair, yanking mics, picking up chairs and ripping up papers.

"MLAs should be given time to hear the views of their constituency people".

Now, amid all this drama, mostly it will depend on the assembly Speaker P Dhanapal. Chennai city police have been taking adequate measures to avoid congregation in the Marina Beach after the pro-jallikattu protests.

The DMK leader said he sat in protest inside the assembly to press his demand.
