Boeing's North Charleston plant votes 'NO' on unionization

A day after a sharply negative and often hostile news conference at the White House, Trump adopted a far more optimistic tone in SC, a state he resoundingly won during the presidential primaries and in the general election.

Teammates at Boeing [NYSE:BA] South Carolina (BSC) have voted to reject the International Association of Machinists' (IAM) attempt to unionize the site. Workers at Boeing's other 787 facility in Washington state are already represented by the IAM union.

The vote preceded by two days a visit by President Donald Trump to attend the rollout of the first Boeing 787-10 Dreamliner from the aircraft maker's campus.

President Donald Trump credited his young presidency Friday with creating a business climate that is incentivizing American companies to keep their businesses in the U.S. and invest in American manufacturing.

"The state has the lowest union membership rate in the country", Alexandra reported for NPR's All Things Considered.

Before his inauguration, Trump blasted Boeing for "out of control" costs of the new Air Force One, saying he would "cancel order" once in office. "Even if they are promising it, they certainly can't deliver it", Templeton said.

"We still want passengers to come in and get ready because those planes will be loaded and ready to go as soon as the FAA clears the air space", Campbell said.

Conservative observers also believe that Trump's nominee for the Supreme Court, Neil Gorsuch, would be the fifth justice in favor of making it vastly more hard for unions to collect dues from workers.

Sounding, at times, like lines lifted from his campaign speeches, the President talked about jobs- in the U.S. While rates of membership in unions are depressed throughout the South, just 1.6 percent of workers in SC belong to a union, the least of any state.

Unlike the smaller -8 and -9 models, which are assembled in both Charleston and Everett, the 787-10 will be built only in SC. IAM plans to continue to encourage the formation of a union at the SC plant.

"They can not legally deliver higher wages, better benefits or a different working environment".

Boeing chose to place a new final assembly line for its Dreamliners in the southern state to avoid strikes that had brought work to a halt in its traditional Puget Sound manufacturing base in 2008. "Just like you built this incredible airplane behind me".

But the Boeing 787 being celebrated by Trump also helps to validate Obama's description of changes in US manufacturing.

Polling places opened early Wednesday morning throughout the aviation giant's sprawling facility in North Charleston.

The anti-union campaign left some employees afraid of retaliation if they voiced support for organizing, said Randy Toler, a union supporter who's worked at Boeing since 2013.
