Narpoli police have booked Prashant Mhatre, cousin of the deceased, and seven others in connection with the murder of Congress corporator Manoj Mhatre last night.

Senior police officers rushed to the spot and a manhunt has been launched to nab the killers, police said.

Manoj Mhatre was returning home from a meeting at around 9.30 PM. "Mhatre was shot and then he was attacked using a chopper and sword". The attack was so brutal that one of Mhatre's arms was severed.

He was rushed to Jupiter Hospital at Thane where doctors declared him brought dead.

DCP Patil had earlier stated that Mhatre was the resident of Kalwa of Bhiwandi taluka, but shifted to Oswal Wadi in Thane due to personal enmity. "We will ask the eyewitnesses to identify the accused once they are detained", said Patil. "We are trying to trace and apprehend them".

Elections for the next term of the Bhiwandi Nizampur Municipal Corporation are scheduled to take place in May. "We don't think there any political angle because we know his Prashant, who has several grudges". "Over the past 15 years, Manoj was the coporator of Bhiwandi's Anjur area".

Police have sent out wireless alerts to Thane Rural, Navi Mumbai and Mumbai police commissionerates, asking them to be on the lookout for Prashant, while his friends and relatives are being questioned about his whereabouts.

According to the police, Manoj's family said they had seen Prashant attacking and verbally abusing the corporator in his building.
