"The withdrawal of Andrew Puzder for consideration as Secretary of Labor is a victory for working families and demonstrates the power of grassroots resistance and mobilizing against corporate greed", said CWA in a statement.
Before the hearing, Republicans were showing a notable level of skepticism about one of Trump's last Cabinet nominees - and certainly the most imperiled - to proceed through Senate confirmation. Other members of the Republican caucus have privately admitted their reluctance to defend Puzder's decision to hire an undocumented maid and then neglect to pay employer taxes, according to The Weekly Standard.
Senator Sheldon Whitehouse, a Democrat from Rhode Island, toldCNN on Wednesday he knew of at least six Republicans "who are gravely concerned about this nomination" and are "considering voting against it".
A senior Republican source on Capitol Hill told NBC News, of the Puzder nomination, "It's dead".
Puzder's confirmation hearing before the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions was delayed four times because he had failed to fill out necessary ethics and financial forms. They argue that the nominee opposes worker-friendly policies - such as a big minimum wage hike and an overtime rule that expands the number of eligible people.
The new flurry of opposition comes in the wake of a growing controversy about Puzder hiring an undocumented immigrant housekeeper.
His ex-wife has retracted her allegations, but the issue has hung over his nomination. It would only take three Republicans to join all 48 Democrats in torpedoing his nomination. Mitch McConnell of Kentucky, informed the White House that Puzder did not have enough votes to be confirmed, The Washington Postreports.
Puzder was one of many millionaires nominated for Trump's cabinet, but he's the first to pull back his nomination.
