Grammys 2017: Adele wins five as Bowie honoured posthumously

Adele not only won big - beating Beyonce for Album of the Year - but she straight up stopped the show during her George Michael tribute. "So a piece of me did die inside, as a Beyoncé stan - not going to lie", she said.

The 62-time Grammy nominee opened her performance with a spoken word piece, complete with a eerily attractive lightshow that saw holograms of daughter Blue Ivy running around her feet.

"Fast Love" - a heartbroken, longing ballad off Michael's 1996 album, Older - had Adele faltering after she couldn't find her note following a key change, and that's when she brought her band to a halt.

After the moving acceptance speech, Adele was photographed on stage holding her trophy, now split in half.

In addition to Bowie, the 2017 Grammys were marked by other absent friends.

The singer, who won a Grammy of her own on Sunday, added words of support for black artists: "create your own committees, build your own institutions, give your friends awards, award yourself, and be the gold you wanna hold [,] my g's".

She then went on to thank her family, and said, "Grammys, I appreciate it, the Academy, I love you, my manager, my husband and my son - you're the only reason I do it".

"Beyonce performing, the Queen is here dummy, slay the whole stage with twins in her tummy", he sang. "I'm very humble and I'm grateful and gracious but the artist of my life is Beyonce and the Lemonade album was just so monumental - Beyonce, it was so monumental. You are our light", the English balladeer said to a visibly moved Beyonce.

Many music industry watchers and fans felt it was Beyonce's year to take home album the year.

Beyonce's album "Lemonade", which was also nominated for the top Grammy award, has been revered as a powerful tribute to black women.

"And all of us artists here adore you", she continued to cheers and applause from the audience.

The pop superstar, who leads the night's nominations, appeared for the first time in public since she set the internet ablaze with news that she is pregnant.
