Mexicans to stage largest protests against Trump and his border wall plan

The Mexican peso has taken a beating almost every time Trump insisted on renegotiating the North American Free Trade Agreement (Nafta), attacked car-makers and other companies that manufacture in Mexico, or vowed to slap steep tariffs on Mexican-made goods.

Many said that the march was sparked by Mr Trump's contentious pledge to "build a wall" to keep out Mexican immigrants from the US.

Anti-Trump protesters in Mexico are holding marches today (12 February) across 20 cities in defiance over the U.S. president's latest immigration and tax policies targeting the nation.

Many dressed in white, and some carried Mexican flags as a sign of unity, while this woman brought a Trump piñata.

USA president Donald Trump has vowed to lower the cost of the wall he plans to build along the country's border with Mexico by using a cheap design. No violence was reported. Some signs read "Respect Mexico" and "We are all Mexico".

Trump recently said it is likely that Mexico will reimburse the United States for the wall in order to speed up construction.

Lopez Obrador, has been labelled by political critics as a "leftist Donald Trump" for his populist, anti-establishment rhetoric.

He had also threatened to impose a 35 percent tariff on products such as vehicles made in Mexico and announced plans to deport six million undocumented immigrants. "Mexico has never been so threatened and never have we had a government so incompetent".

"The Mexican people are aggrieved by this racist attitude that was shown during the campaign and is being crystallized now when he (Trump) is president", he commented.

The president also signed an executive order ending the "catch and release" policy, which allowed those who were caught crossing the border illegally to return to Mexico without being detained.
