Giants releasing RB Rashad Jennings

The Giants are officially in offseason mode.

Just minutes after news broke that Victor Cruz was being released, we're now being informed the Giants will release starting running back Rashad Jennings.

Jennings, meanwhile, joined the Giants in 2014 but after rushing for 863 yards (4.4 YPC) in 2015, he managed just 593 yards (3.3 YPC) last season.

Victor Cruz has said that he wants to play in the National Football League in 2017, in which if he does, it won't be with the only team he's known and played for in his career. He agreed to restructure his contract previous year, which reduced his compensation to $1.3 million for the 2016 season.

The Giants are done with Victor Cruz, at least at his current salary. If the Giants are convinced on Perkins, keeping Vereen and may add another new back, there really isn't a place for Jennings going forward. Previous year post-injury rehabilitation, Cruz caught 39 passes for more than 500 yards in a crowded WR depth chart that now features Odell Beckham, Jr., and Sterling Shepard. The Giants informed Cruz, a Paterson native, of their decision to release him Monday and that he could return, but it would have to be at a reduced rate, according to Stapleton. I'm surprised that he was able to play as much as he did this season. Cruz returned for the Giants' opener against Dallas in September, scoring the game-winning touchdown and, yes, celebrating with an end zone salsa dance, in that matchup. Cruz suffered a sprained ankle after making a 46-yard catch that set up a Giants touchdown against the Eagles in November.

Obviously the production wasn't there for Cruz in 2016, but a lot of that was due to a diminished role with the team. The 49ers have a need for wide receiver help, but Bleeding Green Nation offered up plenty of good reasons not to take a run at Cruz.

"It's been an awesome journey", Cruz said.
