When consumers hear about computing, usually it is now about smartphones, tablets, or ultra-portables.
Internation Data Corporation pegged the number of machines shipped last year at 260 million, calculating a 5.7 percent drop from the previous year.
Preliminary figures from Gartner indicated that PC shipments last year tallied 269.7 million units in a 6.2 percent decline from the previous year.
The first quarter of 2016 was still constrained by high inventory, free Windows 10 upgrades, and hard comparisons to commercial replacements in 2014 that were fueled by the end of support for Windows XP.
"Stagnation in the (personal computer) market continued into the fourth quarter of 2016 as holiday sales were generally weak due to the fundamental change in PC buying behavior", Gartner principal analyst Mikako Kitagawa said in a release. "We have a good opportunity for traditional PC growth in commercial markets, while the consumer segment should also improve as it feels less pressure from slowing phone and tablet markets".
Gartner estimates worldwide PC shipments fell 3.7 percent to 72.6 million units in Q4 2016, marking the ninth quarter of PC shipment declines.
For the whole year, the situation looked even more grim. It measures the market in a slightly different way than IDC.
Japan and Canada extended positive growth from the third quarter. Shipments in the Europe, Middle East, and Africa (EMEA) region remained stable. Latin America, meanwhile, saw a significant contraction.
Lenovo shipped 15,693 units for 22.4% share. All three increased their share of the market in the final quarter of past year, according to both industry trackers. Taiwan-based Asus was No. 5 with 7.4% market share, but its shipments tumbled 11.3%.
The so-called "others" were still larger than the rest of the pack, reportedly having 17,812 units shipped in the fourth quarter for a 25.4% market share.
